Due to audience interest, we're excited to introduce Equine Science Sundays, where we explore topics in equine science outside of just nutrition! To request a topic, shoot us a message on any of our socials, or submit requests through the linked form on our website or connect page!
How do you manage your senior horse's healthcare? According to a recently published study collecting information on the care and health of senior horses in the United States, the most common medical conditions for horses over 15 years of age include:
Osteoarthritis.
Dental disorders.
PPID.
Eye disorders.
While this does not come as a surprise, this study found that despite how common these disorders are, senior horses, especially those who are retired from ridden work, have an increased risk of low routine healthcare.
Despite how common these disorders are in senior horses, senior horses who are no longer in ridden work were reported to have an increased risk of low routine healthcare....in areas that directly relate to these common issues.
Senior horses who are no longer ridden had a higher risk of:
No healthcare visits.
No dental care.
Low farrier frequency (4 or less farrier visits per year).
These findings are particularly concerning when we compare them to the most common disorders affecting senior horses - specifically osteoarthritis and dental disorders.
Hoof balance can have a huge role in the amount of force and pressure placed on the joint, as imbalanced or inappropriate trim & shoeing cycles can alter the absorption ability of the joints.
In addition, routine dental care and checks are important to maintain and monitor dental health, and may dictate how the horse is fed and managed.
While a survey alone cannot give us the whole picture, these trends are concerning. Maintaining normal healthcare routines can play a big role in optimizing your senior horse's golden years, and it is our responsibility as equine caretakers to uphold this level of care.
Senior horse care matters. The quality of their care should not change with their workload. Proactive management is key to keeping your senior horse comfortable and happy ❤️
